Canadian researchers are studying whether hand-held Blackberry devices can help nurses monitor the progress of patients with chronic conditions.
The 120 patients in the program are each given a Blackberry on which they answer a series of daily questions; the information is then transmitted to a computer tracking system. If the system spots any symptom changes, it can alert a nurse.
"You get much better data and you get it on a much more current basis," Neil Johnston, a researcher at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, told The Montreal Gazette. "If care-providers have access to serial information and can track very subtle changes, then they are in a much better position to treat the patient, and the patient gets better treatment."
