Nearly one-third of nursing home hospitalizations for common outpatient conditions are avoidable, according to a report supported by The Commonwealth Fund.
Researchers studying New York State hospital and nursing home data from 1999 to 2004 found that spending on nursing home hospitalizations rose 29%. Almost one-quarter of those costs were for the treatment of conditions such as pneumonia and congestive heart failure. The Commonwealth Fund, a private research and advocacy foundation, adds that earlier research suggests that around 40% of transfers between nursing homes and hospitals are considered inappropriate.
"The high concentration of spending in relatively few conditions suggests that targeted prevention and treatment interventions in nursing homes could be particularly fruitful," conclude the researchers.
