CMS has released new details on reporting and coding hospital-acquired conditions. Since October 1, hospitals have been required under the inpatient prospective payment system (IPPS) to report present-on-admission information for primary and secondary diagnoses.

Starting January, CMS will give hospitals feedback on coding errors, but will return incomplete claims from April. From October 1, hospitals will not receive additional payment for certain conditions not present on admission.

The updates are available on the CMS Web site, and include refreshed information on documentation forms and codes, as well as general reporting requirements.
