Operating room fires more common than expected

New data reports that fires during surgery are more common than previously assumed, according to the Boston Globe. Flammable cleaning solution and pure oxygen in the operating room (OR) increase this risk.

According to the Globe, Massachusetts has had 18 reported cases of fire or smoke in the OR since 2005. Pennsylvania has had 28 OR fires each year over the past three years. Previous studies had estimated that OR fires occur between 50-100 times per year nationwide.
