Although this year's Executive Briefings provided audiences with a chance to interact with Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) brass and hear firsthand about upcoming changes for 2008, some experts in the field observed that few surprises came along. They remarked that The Joint Commission has been more aggressive in years past in releasing new information regarding future standards and bypassing the usual shock factor when new standards are discussed at Briefings. "The message I took away is that, unlike years past, when we waited for the fanfare and drum roll before the announcement of the new standards for the coming year, The Joint Commission has changed the focus and moved to more of an ongoing approach to announcing the standards" in 2007, says Jodi Eisenberg, MHA, CPMSM, CPHQ, program manager for accreditation and clinical compliance at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
