Hand hygiene guidelines expanded to include World Health Organization standards

The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) has expanded its requirement for hand hygiene by allowing those guidelines used by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an alternative option to those guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
"The Joint Commission recognizes that alternative guidelines exist for international healthcare with respect to hand hygiene and that the WHO guidelines are contemporary in their approach," says Elizabeth Zhani, spokesperson for The Joint Commission. "Similarly, U.S.-based healthcare systems occasionally review international guidelines for incorporation into their practices. The Joint Commission has issued this modification to the National Patient Safety Goal in recognition and support of this specific hand hygiene guideline approach."
