Pain treatment remains challenge for hospitals

The balancing act between treating pain and avoiding addiction remains a struggle, according to the October Psychiatric Times.

In 2001, The Joint Commission instituted standards identifying pain as the "fifth vital sign." Pain management continues to be a challenge, with studies showing 9% of Americans surveyed live with moderate to severe chronic pain.
