Bush vetoes SCHIP bill

Accreditation Connection, October 5, 2007

President George Bush vetoed the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) bill Wednesday, a bill popular with both parties, setting up a potential veto override, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Earlier iterations of the bill, which would have increased federally funded health insurance for children, included language which would have removed The Joint Commission's deeming authority. The version passed by the House of Representatives included this language, while the Senate's did not. The final version, which went before Bush this week, did not call for removing The Joint Commission's deeming authority.
