Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, SC, had an unannounced three-day survey in September 2006, during which the surveyors turned their focus to medication management. Almost a year later, Jean Clark, RHIA, service line director for health information management, continues to make medication management a focus of her ongoing mission to keep her hospital compliant postsurvey. The challenge after the survey, says Clark, is to be compliant, not complacent. She says her 141-bed hospital achieves this goal with continuing educational programs and mock surveys. She also continues to review documentation, processes, and policies-even if they weren't the cause for citation in previous surveys.
