Hospital focuses on hazmat while complying with preparedness standards

Porter Medical Center of Middlebury, VT, has begun including hazard materials drills--complete with decontamination tents and head-to-toe protective gear, as part of its Joint Commission-required emergency preparedness drills, says the Addison Independent.

Whereas a drill involving a mass casualty event sends mock victims through the emergency department, the hazmat drill involves treating patients who may have been exposed to hazardous materials outside the facility safely and quickly while avoiding exposure to other patients.
