New VAD certification program launched

Accreditation Connection, September 14, 2007

A certification program for hospitals performing ventricular assist device (VAD) surgery is now available through The Joint Commission. On-site reviews for facilities requesting VAD certification will begin immediately.

A VAD is used to help a weakened heart ventricle to pump. The devices are used more frequently as long-term therapy, whereas previously they were used primarily to support failing hearts awaiting transplants.

Programs that are currently Medicare-approved will have until March 27, 2009 to gain certification from The Joint Commission, according to a release by the accreditation organization.
