Technological advances increase accuracy, frustration

The Baltimore Sun reports that technological advances in hospitals from robots to hand-held devices meant to increase efficiency in monitoring medication delivery and documenting vital signs can also increase stress for nursing staff as they learn to use new hardware or software intended to streamline their workloads.
A study by eHealth Initiative, a nonprofit organization promoting safety through technology, found that computerized prescriptions intended to prevent medication errors improved accuracy by up to 55%. However, a recent town meeting of the American Nurses Association also had many reports of nurses finding the ever-increasing burden of new technology to get in the way of fulfilling their mission.
