Medicare will not pay for treatment for preventable errors

Accreditation Connection, August 27, 2007

According to a new rulebook published by CMS, Medicare will no longer pay for treatments associated with accidents or mistakes could have been prevented during initial treatment, the Wall Street Journal writes.

The report states that Medicare will return bills for problems including:

  • Bed-sores
  • Certain catheter-associated infections
  • Patients given the wrong blood type
  • Objects left inside surgery patients

The American Hospital Association has proposed a narrower list, however.
