'America's Best Hospitals' list raises question of data availability The 2007 list of "America's Best Hospitals" has raised questions about information that is not currently reliable or available, such as medication side effects, patient falls, and injuries due to provider error, writes Avery Comarow of US News & World Report.

Currently only Pennsylvania requires public reporting of consumer-sought data like hospital-acquired infection rates, though roughly 20 other states are preparing to make such information public. At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, president and CEO Paul Levy has posted such data as staffers and hand-hygiene compliance.
