Illiteracy affects mortality rates

A San Antonio-based University Health System clinic has developed a set of pictograms to help patients with limited or no reading ability better understand their medications, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

The pictograms are intended to help communicate the purpose and proper usage of medication patients take home.

According to a nationwide study by the Archives of Internal Medicine, older patients with reading challenges had a 50% higher mortality rate over five years than patients with sufficient reading ability.
