Rhode Island hospital investigated after second wrong-site surgery error

Accreditation Connection, August 13, 2007

The Joint Commission is reviewing a Rhode Island hospital's guidelines for preventing wrong-site surgery after a neurosurgeon operated on the wrong side of a patient's head, the Boston Globe reports.

The error occurred when the surgeon operated on the wrong side of the patient's head. The patient was an 86-year-old man with bleeding between his brain and skull. This is the second time in 2007 that a neurosurgeon has performed wrong-site surgery at the hospital.

Rhode Island health officials are also looking into the case. This health department has ordered the hospital to use an outside consultant to monitor neurosurgery practices, and that a second physician verify each neurosurgery plan. The hospital has suspended the surgeon.

The story can be found here.
