CMS posts final national coverage determination for use of ESA in cancer and related conditions
Accreditation Connection, August 6, 2007
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced this week its final national coverage determination (NCD) for the use of erythopoiesis stimulating agents (ESA) in cancer and other, related neoplastic conditions.
Among the changes to the NCD, it now no longer distinguishes between cancers that have eythoropoietin receptors and those that do not.
ESAs are used to reduce the need for blood transfusion in patients with end-stage renal disease, chronic kidney disease, and other conditions.
The entire CMS statement can be found here.
