For the first time, hospitals will have a full year to phase in the requirements, with full implementation required by January 2009. The timeline set by The Joint Commission for implementing the requirements in stages includes the -following: Healthcare organization leaders must assign responsibility for developing, testing, and implementing requirements by April 1, 2008 A plan must be developed by July 1, 2008, to identify resources and responsibilities and set a timeline for full implementation by January 1, 2009 Pilot testing must begin in at least one clinical unit by October 1, 2008 The requirements of the goals must be fully implemented by January 1, 2009
