PA bill takes aim at preventing staph infections

New legislation, signed into law this month by Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell, will require hospitals to test for resistant bacteria in the highest-risk patients, according to a report in the Philadelphia Daily News.

In addition, hospitals must test staff members in contact with contagious patients, and all patients admitted from nursing homes,.

The law, while pushing hospitals to meet benchmarks to increase prevention of hospital-acquired infections, also rewards compliant facilities by offering higher reimbursements to those who improve.
