Nursing home patient's release prompts review of hospital procedures

Accreditation Connection, July 30, 2007

A nursing home patient was discharged from an Iowa hospital following medical tests, but never returned to the nursing home, a case which has launched a review of procedures at University Hospitals in Iowa City, according to an Associated Press report.

A team of state inspectors from the Iowa Department for Inspections and Appeals are conducting the review at the request of the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services regional office, located in Kansas City.

The patient, according to the report, was discharged by the hospital without notification to the nursing home. The patient arrived days later at a relative's home. Details have not been released as to how the patient made it to the relative's care.
