Joint Commission study: Medical errors lead to stress for physicians

Accreditation Connection, July 23, 2007

According to a study published in the August issue of The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety after medical errors and near-errors, physicians experience notable stress - a finding that indicates healthcare organizations need to increase the support provided to staff in the aftermath of an error or near-miss.

According to an official release by The Joint Commission, 92% of the 3,100 physicians surveyed had been involved in an error or near-miss. Half of those involved in an error reported detrimental effects to their stress levels following the incident, as did a third of those related in near-misses only.
