A coalition of 18 health organizations has issued a report detailing 53 recommendations to improve preparation and response to catastrophic disasters, according to a report by the American Medical Association (AMA).

The coalition, led by the AMA and the American Public Health Association offered the strategic recommendations not only for healthcare organizations but legislators and government officials to improve disaster preparedness through better funding, planning, training, and legal protections.

"We can't predict when a disaster will strike, but as first responders, we can better prepare ourselves and others to protect the health and safety of our patients and citizens," Ronald M. Davis, MD, president of the AMA, said in an official statement.
