Low number of surgeries puts hospital's heart transplant program at risk

One of three South Central Texas heart transplant programs risks losing federal funding after The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) warned the hospital did not meet the required number of transplant surgeries, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

Christus Santa Rosa Medical Center must give CMS a 30-day plan on how the organization intends to correct the problem. Nationwide, heart transplant programs are experiencing difficulties in keeping heart transplant patient rates up.
