Pay-for-performance groups improve diabetes care while lowering costs

Physician groups that are part of a pay-for-performance Medicare trial met performance goals after one year, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) announced recently. The three-year study evaluates physician groups that manage the overall healthcare needs of patients with chronic illnesses.

Physicians used evidence-based guidelines for diabetes patients to improve management of care and reduce Medicare costs. Although all groups lowered costs, two of the 10 groups succeeded in gaining performance payment awards.
