Emergency room visits up 20% from 1995 to 2005

Accreditation Connection, July 9, 2007

Emergency room visits in 2005 climbed to 115.3 million, equaling 39.6 visits per 100 people, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a report released on June 29. The data comes from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS). This survey was started in 1992 to measure data about ED trends.

In addition to larger numbers of people visiting ED, those people visit more often and to a smaller number of EDs than were available in the U.S. in 1995. The number of EDs dropped from 4,176 to 3,795.

This report highlights the increasing pressure that EDs are under in this country, often taking a toll on staff members and patient safety. To read the full report, click here.
