CMS gives King-Harbor Hospital plenty of second chances

Accreditation Connection, June 18, 2007

Although Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital in Los Angeles has failed several inspections by CMS since January 2004, federal regulators have yet to pull the hospital's certification, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The hospital has a unique history and reputation for serving a poor, mostly minority community. CMS administrators say the need in the community for the hospital and its commitment to improve are reasons to give the hospital more time to comply.

Last week, CMS told King-Harbor it had 23 days to correct problems or lose its funding after it found patients to be in immediate jeopardy, including a woman who died waiting for assistance in the emergency room lobby and a man who waited for four days without treatment for a brain tumor.

The Joint Commission pulled the hospital's accreditation in February 2005.
