Pennsylvania hospitals oppose statewide reporting system

Pennsylvania hospitals are opposing legislation that would require them to report infections using a single, statewide electronic system, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania cites costs--especially to small, rural hospitals--as the main reason for opposing the system. According to a 2006 hospital association survey, about 25 % of the state's hospitals are currently using electronic systems to monitor infections.

The efforts to reduce hospital-acquired infections are part of Governor Ed Rendell's plan to push healthcare costs down. The state administration reported that such infections led to nearly $3.5 billion in hospital charges last year.
