Joint Commission gets closer to revised MM.4.10 standards

Accreditation Connection, June 4, 2007

On May 17, representatives from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), as well as other emergency care organizations met with key Joint Commission staff to discuss revising the MM.4.10 standard that requires prospective pharmacy reviews of medications prior to administration.

The organizations stressed to The Joint Commission their concerns about the standard and the recent changes to it, including the rescission of the interim action that allowed for retrosprective reviews in the emergency department.

The Joint Commission told the groups that the standards division will be making recommendations based on the conversation and that interpretive guidelines for the standard should be published in the next three to four weeks, according to the ACEP Web site.
