Chicago-area hospital could face accreditation status downgrade

Accreditation Connection, June 4, 2007

Stroger Hospital, the top public hospital in Cook County, IL, is facing the possibility of conditional accreditation after receiving 16 RFIs on its recent unannounced survey, according to The Chicago Tribune.

Although health officials are saying most of the areas of noncompliance are minor and the hospital should be able to regain full accreditation, the county's interim health chief, Robert Simon, told the Tribune that the organization would make the Joint Commission's findings public after the agency releases its final results.

Simon did mention a few of the areas the hospital got cited for, however. He said surveyors cited the hospital for poor critical test result reporting, including having clerical staff relay results to a doctor or nurse. He also said surveyors found instances of improper patient identification by staff prior to procedures and physicians not washing their hands between every patient encounter.

Surveyors initially cited the hospital with 22 RFIs, but county officials have had six overturned already.
