FAQ clarifies role of interpretive readers in IC process

Accreditation Connection, May 28, 2007

A new FAQ posted on The Joint Commission's Web site makes it clear that hospitals do not have to perform risk assessments on the transmission of infectious disease among interpretive readers because these providers don't come in contact with patients or specimens.

However, the FAQ did emphasize the importance of interpretive reading services in disease detection and communication. Interpretive readers must have a defined process for communicating the results of infectious disease to the provider who ordered the test in a timely fashion, according to The Joint Commission.

There is also an expectation that the hospitals infection control practitioner will also be notified about an urgent results, the FAQ says.
