Accreditation Connection, May 28, 2007

The Joint Commission last week released data on hospital compliance with the National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) for the first quarter of 2007 on its Web site. The data comes from 330 surveys performed by The Joint Commission from January to March.

NPSG #2B, eliminating unapproved abbreviations, had the highest rate of noncompliance, with 36.1% of hospitals being cited for this goal. NPSG #2C, reporting critical test results, also scored poorly on surveys with 35.8% of hospitals found noncompliant. This also represented the biggest drop in compliance from 2006, as only 26.9% of hospitals were noncompliant with #2C last year.

NPSG #7B, healthcare associated infection, received 100% compliance for the first quarter, while NPSG #8A, medication reconciliation, saw the most improvement from 2006 (down to 18.2% noncompliance from 33.9% in 2006).
