Michigan association pushes for communication before surgery
Accreditation Connection, May 14, 2007
The Michigan Health and Hospital Association announced a safer surgery plan based on more communication between surgeons, nurses, and physicians prior to and post surgical procedure, reports The Detroit News.
The plan is part of the association's Keystone Center for Patient Safety & Quality, which has already had success stories improving intensive care units, reducing hospital-acquired infections, and boosting organ donations.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan gave the program $6 million to help train staff to have a brief discussion about the surgical plan, risks, and other safety concerns prior to surgery and then have another discussion post-surgery to discuss what happened, according to The Detroit News.
