PC.12.90 revised to align with CMS restraint rule

Accreditation Connection, May 14, 2007

The Joint Commission revised standard PC.12.90, an evaluation of patients in restraints or seclusion, to align with the December 2006 CMS final rule change, according to The Joint Commission's Web site.

The CMS rule says that a registered nurse (RN) or physician assistant (PA) may evaluate a patient one hour after starting restraints or seclusion. The RN or PA must be trained in the CMS requirements and must report and consult with the attending physician as soon as possible after the evaluation.

This revision is effective immediately.
