Editor's note: Sue Dill-Calloway, RN, MSN, JD, director of hospital risk management for OHIC Insurance Company, The Doctor's Company, in Columbus, OH, is the CMS corner lead contributor. Submit a topic idea to her by contacting BOJ editor Kevin Moschella at kmoschella@hcpro.com. Every hospital that accepts Medicare and Medicaid patients must follow CMS' Conditions of Participants (CoP) for all patients. Access a copy of the CoPs at www.cms.hhs.gov/manuals/downloads/som107_Appendicestoc.pdf. CMS takes these regulations and then applies information to help the surveyors' survey the standards. This combined document is called the interpretive guidelines.
