St. Mary's could lose accreditation

Accreditation Connection, April 23, 2007

Understaffing and a faulty water pump led to a Joint Commission decision of preliminary denial of accreditation for St. Mary's Hospital in Passaic, NJ, according to NorthJersey.com.

The state Department of Health and Senior Services found in a March inspection that the hospital had too few nurses on staff to operate safely. Two weeks ago The Joint Commission found a faulty fire-pump, which was grounds for automatic denial, reported the Web site.

St. Mary's also ran into trouble for not filing the proper paperwork about the faulty pump. The problems at St. Mary's reportedly began when it took control of the bankrupt PBI Regional Medical center, according to NorthJersey.com. The hospital is staffed to handle 80% of the 264 beds, but patient levels regularly exceed the 80% capacity rate.
