Joint Commission rescinds interim action on MM.4.10
Accreditation Connection, April 23, 2007
In a memo to accredited hospitals and critical access hospitals last week, The Joint Commission rescinded the interim action for MM.4.10, EP1 for emergency departments, (ED) effective immediately.
The decision means pharmacists no longer must perform retrospective reviews on medication distributed without prospective pharmacist or licensed independent practitioner (LIP) review.
A prospective review by a pharmacist is still required unless an LIP controls the medication order, administration, and preparation or the situation is considered urgent. Urgency is defined by the individual hospital based on the patient's condition.
For a full breakdown of what the rescision means, check out the June issue of BOJ.
