Joint Commission will accredit VAD programs

Accreditation Connection, April 16, 2007

Hospitals that implant ventricular assist devices (VAD) as destination therapy are now eligible to receive certification from The Joint Commission, the agency announced on its Web site.

CMS plans to provide coverage for VAD to some Medicare beneficiaries, but hospitals must be VAD certified to receive reimbursement for the service. The Joint Commission standards will address:

  • Delivering or facilitating clinical care
  • Performance measurement
  • Supporting self-management
  • Program management
  • Clinical information management
