CMS releases new transplant rules
Accreditation Connection, April 2, 2007
CMS increased the scrutiny placed on transport rules with new regulations released last week, according to a CMS press release.
The new rules could cost many transplant programs their approval or funding if the programs don't comply with the standards within 90 days. The new rules require that programs:
Perform an average of 10 transplants per year
Have survival rates that match expected national average rates after taking in the program's unique characteristics
Reveal to potential recipients survival numbers
Notify patients if the program has only one qualified transplant surgeon
Notify Medicare if any requirements can't be met
