Joint Commission releases report on hospital diversity

Accreditation Connection, April 2, 2007

In its continued effort to improve communication between hospital staff and patients of all education, culture, and languages, The Joint Commission last week released a report titled Hospitals, Language, and Culture: A Snapshot of the Nation.

The new report comes just a little more than a month after releasing a report on improving health literacy. Together, the reports put more of an onus on hospitals to keep patients better informed on their rights, medications, and overall health.

The Joint Commission wants to ensure that language and education barriers do not stand in the way of patients receiving safe, effective care.

The new report examines the challenges hospitals face in providing care to patients who speak foreign languages and come from diverse cultures. It looks at how 60 hospitals across the country are dealing with the problems from the following points of view:
 Leadership
 Quality improvement and data use
 Workforce
Patient safety and provision of care
 Language services
 Community engagement
