The Joint Commission can still accredit CMS labs

Accreditation Connection, March 5, 2007

CMS granted The Joint Commission continued deeming authority under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA), according to a press release.

This allows laboratories accredited by The Joint Commission to meet CLIA and Medicare requirements. CMS says it found that The Joint Commission standards for labs are equal or more stringent than CLIA requirements.

The renewed status lasts for five years, according to the 2007 Federal Register.
