New Joint Commission initiative to focus on measuring nursing performance
Accreditation Connection, February 26, 2007
The Joint Commission is beginning a new initiative to focus on ways to measure nursing performance in hopes of developing standards by which to measure nursing care. The goal of this initiative is to raise the overall level of quality of nursing care.
The program, being funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, want to demonstrate just how much nursing care is tied to excellent patient safety. The measures will be developed over two years.
The measures in this initiative are endorsed by the National Quality Forum NQF). Both the Joint Commission and the NQF think that a two year time span is reasonable to judge whether the measures are reliable in a hospital setting and can be used to appropriately judge the abilities of nurses.
This two year trial period is expected to yield a concrete set of measures that will be used to measure how much of an influence nurses have on patient safety.
