Joint Commission releases long-awaited 2007 Goals FAQs

Accreditation Connection, February 5, 2007

On February 1, The Joint Commission released new Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) pertaining to the 2007 National Patient Safety Goals. Several FAQ are of particular significance because they "raise the bar" on what will be required to demonstrate compliance with the NPSGs, experts say.

In light of these additional or clarified requirements, many hospitals will need to return to the drawing board to determine how to best modify policy, procedure, and practice to meet these new expanded expectations. There are significant additional requirements for patient identification, read-back, dangerous abbreviations, critical tests/critical results, hand-off communication, limiting medication concentrations/Broselow-Luten tape and rule of six, medication labeling, hand hygiene, medication reconciliation, and assessment of high-risk populations.

The FAQs answer the field's most common questions and they are considered requirements. Joint Commission surveyors will use them during onsite surveys.

In addition to the FAQs, be sure not to overlook the eight page document, "Questions About the Applicability of the NPSGs and Associated Requirements" on The Joint Commission's Web site.
