H&Ps, verbal orders among CMS reg revisions for hospitals
Accreditation Connection, December 5, 2006
The four new CMS requirements are:
- H&P examination. This requirement expands the timeframe for H&P completions and the number of people who may perform H&Ps.
- Verbal order authentication. This regulation requires that all orders, including verbal orders, must be dated, timed, and authenticated by the prescribing practitioner. For a five-year period, all orders must be authenticated by the prescribing practitioner or the practitioner responsible for the care of the patient, even if the order didn't originate with him or her.
- Medication security. This regulation requires that all drugs and biologicals be kept in secure areas, locked when appropriate, but allows flexibility for hospitals that want to determine control of nonscheduled drugs and biologicals.
- Postanesthesia evaluation. This requirement permits evaluation by any individual qualified to administer anesthesia, not just the individual who administered it.
