Hospital blog reports JCAHO imposters

Accreditation Connection, December 4, 2006

In a September 29 post to its blog, Backus Hospital reports that the Connecticut Hospital Association (CHA) announced in September that a Connecticut hospital recently experienced a JCAHO imposter incident.

According to CHA Vice President Carrie Brady, several staff members from an unidentified hospital noticed three individuals (two women and one man) in business attire sitting in the hospital lounge writing on clipboards and displaying an identification badge from the JCAHO, according to the blog post.

Staff were surprised to see the JCAHO in the hospital and asked if they could be of assistance. Their offer was declined, so staff went to report JCAHO's presence to the unit manager, according to the post. Staff returned with the unit manager but the individuals were gone. Security was notified and the hospital went into lock down. Shortly after, the fire alarm was pulled, which automatically opened select egress doors. Security searched but the imposters were not found.

Backus Hospital reminds staff in its blog to notify your immediate supervisor immediately if you experience any incident with apparent JCAHO imposters, advice that is helpful to all accredited organizations worried about the possibility of JCAHO imposters. Staff should then report the incident to the JCAHO and your state hospital association.
