An alternative accreditor awaits approval
Accreditation Connection, June 5, 2006
Later this month it is expected that TÜV Healthcare Specialists (TÜVHS) will hear back from the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) on whether its hospital standards program has been granted deemed status. If so, the company could be an alternative accreditor for hospitals.
Many field experts and consultants believe TÜVHS will hear positively from CMS by month's end. Carmen Hopwood, a marketing communications specialist with TUV America, said the company expects CMS to enter its deemed status in the Federal Register on June 27.
Accreditation Connection will be following this story for you in future issues.
TÜVHS was founded in 2004 as a joint venture when the principals of Healthcare Specialists Inc. (HSI) teamed with TÜV America Inc., according to the company's Web site. Headquartered in Cincinnati, TÜVHS claims to be an innovative healthcare management systems evaluation, accreditation, and training company. The TÜVHS accreditation program integrates the ISO 9001 Quality Management System into the accreditation process.
In June 2005, TÜVHS submitted its application for deeming authority for hospitals to CMS. The application has been under CMS review since the beginning of the year, a process that takes about six months. If it is approved, TÜVHS will be the first new accreditation option for hospitals in 40 years. Hospitals are typically accredited by JCAHO or the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP).
TÜVHS is offering a free Webinar about its hospital accreditation standards on June 15.
HCPro Inc. recently included information about TÜVHS and other accreditors in its new book, Accreditation Alternatives for Healthcare.
