JCAHO president, other leaders, back health courts

Accreditation Connection, July 10, 2006

Common Good, a bipartisan legal reform coalition, announced last week that six leaders in patient safety and healthcare quality, including JCAHO President Dennis O'Leary, are calling for pilot special health court projects.

Special health courts are meant to restore reliability to medical justice. U.S. senators Michael Enzi (R-WY) and Max Baucus (D-MT) have introduced a bill to authorize and fund pilot health courts. Hearings were held last month.

O'Leary issued this statment of support: "Our collective ability to forge real improvements in patient care requires timely creation of injury compensation systems--like special healthcare courts--that are patient-centered and focused on safety. The legislation introduced by Senators Enzi and Baucus is a major step forward in this regard."
