Berwick, O'Leary, among contributors of new board quality study

A new study from The Governance Institute finds that when a hospital's board is involved in quality oversight, it can positively affect performance.
The study, Quality released July 10, contains original research analyzed jointly with Solucient.
"Hospital board members across the country need to be asking themselves 'what are we doing to improve the quality of care?' This is the first phase of research in board oversight of quality that identifies board practices that contribute to overall hospital performance and, ultimately, to improved quality and safety," according to Carlin Lockee, managing editor at The Governance Institute and co-author of the study, quoted in a press release.
The study is designed to give boards insight and tool to make a difference in their organizations' quality journey, according to the release. It offers data on best practices for hospitals. The chapters, most of which include a DVD with expert interviews, include:
Contributors include Don Berwick, president and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Dennis O'Leary, JCAHO president, and Todd Sagin, vice president and national medical director for The Greeley Company, a division of HCPro Inc.
