Accreditation Connection, October 23, 2006

The JCAHO posted to its Web site last week information about how to participate in its hospital-based inpatient psychiatric services (HBIPS) measure test.

The JCAHO has identified an initial set of candidate core performance measures addressing HBIP in its work with

  • the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems
  • the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors
  • the NASMHPD Research Institute, Inc.
  • along with input from the American Psychiatric Association and a group of 24 key stakeholders.

The five candidate measures in the set address the following quality-related dimensions of in-patient psychiatric care are

  • Assessment of violence risk, substance use disorder, trauma, and patient strengths completed
  • Hours of restraint use
  • Patients discharged on multiple antipsychotic medications
  • Discharge assessment
  • Aftercare recommendations sent to the next level of care providers on discharge

JCAHO-accredited hospitals that provide inpatient psychiatric services are invited to test the initial set of candidate core performance measures beginning January 1.
