Tip for medication labeling in a sterile environment

National Patient Safety Goal 3 requires hospital staff to label all medications, medication containers, and solutions in the sterile field in perioperative settings.

Tim O'Kelley, risk manager at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City, says keeping labels and a marker in the sterile environment is a good start. "We'll include what medications we use and keep labels on the cart," says O'Kelley. "We just use a sterile marker, and we'll mark the labels as we go."
