Tell staff: National Patient Safety Goals are more than "just a requirement"
Accreditation Connection, February 13, 2006
Organizations that present the National Patient Safety Goals as JCAHO requirements generally meet with resistance from their staff, especially the medical staff, say Della Lin, MD and Glenn Krasker, MHSA, in their book, The JCAHO 2006 National Patient Safety Goals.
"If the Goals are presented as JCAHO edicts, then, like all external requirements, the practices associated with them will be met with some resentment," Lin and Krasker write.
"Instead, try to 'humanize' the Goals by sharing some true stories of healthcare errors that led to their establishment. Bring the Goals to life for your organization by associating a person's (or, better yet, a child's) face with each of the Goals, with a caption such as, 'Thank you for saving my (or my mommy's) life by using two patient identifiers.'"
